Winona State University, Marketing & Communications May 2023 – Feb. 2024 (contract, Full-time)

University Communication Specialist

In this position, I got my first true look into web writing and design. I’ve also had the chance to dabble in a variety of other marketing sectors, including email, print advertisement, and blogging.

01

Writing, editing, Web design

Web Content Migration

I was appointed to my current position to support the development of a new website for WSU.

Web Writing & Editing: I edit existing web content for grammar, length, SEO, clarity, and accessibility. I also write new web content as needed.

Design: From implementing accessibility standards to making each page visually appealing, I draft and create pages on WordPress to suit everyone’s needs.

02

management, organization

Virtual Tour: Project Manager

I served as the project manager overseeing the development of a virtual tour of WSU’s campus.

Communication: I was the primary contact of representatives from Mass Interact.

Organization: I created, gathered, and organized different components required for the final product.

Written Content: I wrote all text included in the tour, including external assets.

03

research, creative writing

Program Finder

I am working on WSU’s Program Finder, helping students explore the academic paths we have to offer.

WordPress: I help draft, build, and publish pages within WordPress.

Data Collection: I gather, condense, and organize meaningful information used to describe academic programs to perspective students.

04

adaptability, time management

A Little Bit of Everything

Of course, there’s more. Look at what else I’m up to between 9 am–5 pm.

Blogs: I wrote blogs as a student employee, and still create the occasional blog here and there.

Copy Editing: I enhance written material, fixing grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style.

Marketing Campaigns: I have contributed to RFI emails, captions, and print advertisements for our newest campaign, “Take the Torch.”

As an English major, I never would have thought I’d work in social media. This student position opened my eyes to the world of potential my Writing degree offers.

This role also paved the way for my current job. I was offered my full-time position upon graduation because of my work as a student in the Marketing and Communications department.
